What skills do I need to learn for Apex Legends?

Apex Legends is a unique squad-based hero shooter that incorporates both a battle royale and three-versus-three arena mode. Beginners will be faced with a challenging, yet rewarding, checklist of skills to learn. Understanding each legend’s abilities and roles, how to maintain good positioning and rotations (closing in by advancing through cover), and all the mechanical aspects of gunplay are all essential for improvement.

Here are some important concepts to learn in Apex Legends:

Positioning and rotation: You could be a mechanically talented player, but if you don’t know how to position in tandem with your squad mates, you won’t make it far. If you’re caught out of position, you’ll expose yourself to enemy harassment that will create openings for the opposing team to push, forcing you to either retreat or engage at a disadvantage. Good positioning and cover management are key to survival.

Understanding Legend’s roles: Playing to your legend’s strengths is important. For example, If you have a team composed of legends with lots of mobility,  you’ll want to push that advantage whenever you can by scouting and rotating aggressively. If your team lacks mobility, you’ll want to bunker down and position yourselves defensively.

Weapon mechanics: All guns have a predetermined, static recoil pattern. You can fully spray and have complete control the entire time; the recoil will be exactly the same every time. Getting familiar with the recoil quality of each weapon will help you be more accurate.

Engagement strategies: A good basic engagement strategy is to favor medium range firefights at first contact, then close in after you’ve  shredded the enemy team’s armor and forced them to use up their healing items. Strategizing to your team’s specific weapon loadouts is essential - for example, if a teammate is using a sniper rifle,  you’ll want to have  squad members with strong medium range weapons as well to help engage opponents who decide to close in.

Generally, avoid splitting up too much. Be aware of what teammates are doing and always be aware of their health. Don’t engage in a firefight unless your whole team can engage.

Using the practice range: The practice range is such a useful tool - you can practice movement, aim, and get familiar with weapons. It’s very useful for practicing scenarios that you may encounter in a live game, and it’s the best place to practice movement. Here you can freely practice how and when to slide, wall jumps, and rotation drills.

Mentorship from a skilled coach can help accelerate growth and capitalize overall playtime - a player who spends more time training will grow faster in less amount of time than a player who isn’t structured with his practice and simply pours hundreds of hours in online scrimmages. This is one of the reasons why Vanta emphasizes the importance of incorporating expert coaching into an esports program.
